In North India, it's called Safeda (meaning “white” or “light coloured” in Urdu). In Andhra Pradesh, the same variety is known as Banganapalli — named after Banganapalle town in Kurnool district, where it was first cultivated and where it holds a GI tag.

What Is Safeda Mango?
Safeda (Banganapalli) is one of India's most widely grown commercial mango varieties. It is large — often 400–700g per fruit — with a firm, golden-yellow flesh that is moderately sweet and low in fibre. It is consumed fresh, used for juice and pulp, and is particularly popular for its large size.

Safeda vs Banganapalli — Are They the Same?
Yes and no. Safeda and Banganapalli are the same genetic variety. The GI tag for Banganapalli is held by Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. When grown in UP, Punjab, or Haryana — without the specific Andhra terroir — the same variety may taste slightly different and lacks the GI designation. The Andhra-grown Banganapalli is considered superior and is the GI-certified version.
