Malda's Key Mango Varieties

Himsagar (Bengal's Finest)

Himsagar is the crown jewel of Malda. Fiberless, intensely pulpy, and overwhelmingly sweet, it is widely considered the best eating mango from Bengal — and for many connoisseurs, the best in India. Available May to June. → Full Himsagar page

Langra (The Bengal Version)

The Malda Langra is closely related to the Varanasi original but develops slightly different characteristics in Bengal's soil and climate. Green-skinned like all Langra, but with a distinctive Bengal flavour. Available June to July. Compare with UP Langra.

Fazli (The Giant of Malda)

Fazli is one of India's largest mango varieties — a single fruit can weigh 1–2 kg. It is a late-season variety available in July–August. Moderately sweet, firm flesh, excellent for large families and cooking. Fazli is so significant to Malda's identity that the government has sought GI recognition for it.

Kohitur (The Nawab's Mango)

Kohitur is grown in the Murshidabad district adjoining Malda — historically associated with the Nawabs of Bengal. It is extremely rare, almost seedless (the seed is paper-thin), and considered one of the most delicate mangoes in India. Very limited availability.

Why Malda Mangoes Are Different

Malda's agro-climate creates a unique environment. The light, sandy-loam alluvial soil along the Ganga-Mahananda river system is rich in specific minerals. The winter fog and mild summers create a slow ripening process that concentrates sugars without sacrificing aromatics. This is why Malda Himsagar is distinctly different from Himsagar grown in other Bengali districts.
